Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

If you thought Kanye West might opt to give a low-key, drama-free concert following a recent show in which he shocked fans by declaring he would have voted for Donald Trump, you would be mistaken.

Undeterred by the largely negative reaction to his declaration of support for the President-elect, the producer-turned-rapper's subsequent performance in Sacramento, California on Saturday night was equally controversial.

According to concert goers, West arrived to the stage more than an hour late. When he did arrive, he reportedly launched into a series of rambling tirades which involved criticising Beyonce and his former mentor, frequent collaborator and ‘big brother’ Jay Z.

Kanye West: 'I would have voted for Trump'

He went on to perform a grand total of three songs, according to disappointed fans, who said he also embarked on a separate diatribe about defeated Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

The artist appeared to anticipate this stunt would once again make headlines, announcing: “Get ready to have a field day press because the show’s over” before dropping his microphone, as sections of the crowd broke out into boos.

One of the only positives from the show, according to fans, was the fact he brought out Kid Cudi for one of the three songs.

On Thursday night, the rapper had interrupted his San Jose concert to embark on a political rant – which he has done many times before – however, this time he shocked fans by announcing the President-elect would have got his vote (if he had actually voted) in a 40-minute speech.

During the speech he also told fans to “stop focusing on racism”, which came as a surprise given he had once accused President George W Bush of “not caring about black people” as Hurricane Katrina ravaged New Orleans.

Representatives for West did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
