From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. A cake moulded into the shape of Donald Trump's head was delivered to his election night event, billed as the Republican's “victory party”.

Melissa Alt, 24, brought the sweet treat to the Hilton Midtown hotel in Manhattan, where Trump supporters gathered to await the presidential election result.

Ms Alt, from New Jersey, said she spent 50 hours making the chocolate cake and it was valued at around 7,000 dollars.

She said: “I made a Hillary cake for a client so I decided to make a Donald Trump cake.

“The hair was actually the easiest part. Everyone asks 'was it the hardest part?' I guess I find hair easy to sculpt.”

Ms Alt said she approached the Trump campaign about delivering the cake to the event but declined to say if she supported the presidential candidate.

The cake depicts Mr Trump in a suit and tie and shows his trademark hair style.
