Tributes to legendary glam rock singer David Bowie have been shared online after he died following an 18-month battle with cancer.

His son, Duncan Jones, confirmed his death on Twitter by sharing a picture of himself as a child sat on his father's shoulders.

The announcement of his death came from the musician's social media profiles, asking the public to respect the "family's privacy during their time of grief".

Kanye West, Eddie Izzard and Gene Simmons are among those who have paid tribute to the star on Twitter.

David Bowie's death comes two days after he released his 25th and final album '★' (Blackstar).

The album, described as "the most extreme album of his entire career", was well received by critics.
