It is not the first time tycoon Elon Musk and actress Talulah Riley have divorced, but at least this time around the billionaire decided against broadcasting it on Twitter.

When the couple first split in January 2012, Musk tweeted: “It was an amazing four years. I will love you forever. You will make someone very happy one day.”

This time, Musk, 43, filed for divorce from his 29-year-old wife in the Los Angeles County Superior Court on New Year’s Eve. The couple put out a joint statement saying they are splitting amicably.

The couple first married in 2010, divorced two years later, and were re-married after 18 months in July 2013. They have no children together, but Musk has five sons from a previous marriage.

Billionaire Musk, who founded online payment system PayPal, owns electric car company Tesla and also the private aerospace company SpaceX, has agreed to give Riley $16 million (£10.3 million) in cash and other assets as part of a financial settlement, the couple said in their statement.

The divorce filing said property would be split based on a prenuptial agreement.

Riley, who has appeared in Pride & Prejudice, Inception and St Trinians, has been writing and directing a feature film in the UK, called Scottish Mussell for the last five months, during which time the couple had been living apart.
