From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The producer of Midsomer Murders, who controversially claimed that the drama was the "last bastion of Englishness", has stepped down .

Brian True-May will leave the ITV1 series at the end of the "current production run", following the row over comments that he made to the Radio Times. Mr True-May said that the detective series, which has run on ITV1 for 14 years, "wouldn't work" if there was racial diversity in the village life. All3Media, the Midsomer production company, suspended Mr True-May and launched an internal investigation into his comments.

The company said that Mr True-May had been reinstated as producer, after making a public apology for giving "unintended offence to any viewers".

But an ITV spokesman added: "We welcome the apology from Brian True-May and understand that he will step down from his role on Midsomer Murders at the end of the current production run."
