TRYING to keep cool at the Richmond Royal Horse Show at the Old Deer Park in west London. The three-day show-jumping event, which started on Friday, was yesterday bathed in the best British weather this year. Only northern Scotland missed the fine, sunny weather and London had the top temperature, 79F (26C).

The British capital was cool compared with Paris, where the men's final of the French Open was played in temperatures topping 100F (38C) in a match lasting nearly four hours (Report, page 32).

At Old Trafford, many empty seats signalled disappointment at England's Test match performance against Australia (Report, page 32).

Lack of wind near Eastbourne meant cancellation of the final day's North Sea Cup windsurfing.

But Nigel Mansell kept his cool to win the Milwaukee round of the IndyCar World Series (Page 31).
