University fees will be capped, says Vince Cable

There is "no prospect" of the Government allowing unlimited degree tuition fees, according to the Business Secretary Vince Cable, despite Lord Browne recommending that universities in England should be free to set their own fees. "That simply isn't going to arise," said Mr Cable.

The Deputy Prime Minister, Nick Clegg, added: "I am uneasy about the idea that you have unlimited fees. So we are looking at something more restrained." The most likely scenario is a fee cap of around £6,000-£7,000 a year, even if that would anger some elite universities.
