University of Exeter expels law students over ‘racist’ Whatsapp messages

‘We are absolutely committed to take serious action against those whose behaviour is fundamentally at odds with our commitment to inclusivity, tolerance and respect’

A number of law students who allegedly made racist comments have been expelled by the University of Exeter after private WhatsApp conversations were shared on Facebook.

A student posted screenshots of the “racist and vile” messages alleged to have been sent between Bracton Law Society members – which included “If they’re black, send em back.”

Racial slurs, derogatory terms and rape “jokes” featured in the group chat called “Dodgy Blokes Soc” .

The University of Exeter launched an internal investigation into the comments in March.

It said that its inquiry had resulted in “expulsions, suspensions and other significant sanctions” but the students in question had the right to appeal.

In a statement, the university said: “Exeter does not tolerate any form of racist, sexist or bigoted behaviour and is committed to eradicating any instances of discrimination and harassment that may arise.

“These sanctions demonstrate our absolute commitment to take serious action against those whose behaviour is fundamentally at odds with our commitment to inclusivity, tolerance and respect.”

The university added that it has established a new “Provost Commission” to work towards an “open diverse and safe university community”.

Student Arsalan Motavali, who first revealed the WhatsApp messages, wrote on Twitter: “Expulsions and suspensions for them all.

“Can’t thank everybody who showed support enough, you’re the best.”

There have been a number of recent reports of racist incidents at universities. Sheffield Hallam University recently launched an investigation after a black student was allegedly called a monkey by staff.

The incident came after a banana was reportedly thrown at a black Sheffield Hallam graduate during an ice hockey match between his alma mater and city rivals, the University of Sheffield.

Meanwhile, two teenagers will appear in court after a video of alleged racist chanting in student halls went viral.

Rufaro Chisango, a Nottingham Trent University student, posted footage she recorded on social media last month – which included chants of “We hate the blacks” and “Sign the Brexit papers”.
