Clinton gives Adams a visa

PRESIDENT Bill Clinton decided yesterday to give a visa to Gerry Adams, the Sinn Fein president, to allow him to speak at a conference in New York tomorrow.

He is allowed to spend only 48 hours in the US and may not travel more than 25 miles from New York or raise funds.

The US had previously refused a visa unless he renounced violence. Britain was opposed, but on Friday Mr Adams issued a statement, saying he would 'go the extra mile' for peace, which seems to have clinched the decision.
