Motorola, the US semiconductor manufacturer, is planning a pounds 250m expansion at its East Kilbride plant, creating an extra 250 jobs, taking the total workforce there to 2,250.
The Glen's birth dates to the wartime relocation of Ferranti, whose plants in London were vulnerable to bombing.
More than 450 electronics companies now operate in Scotland, employing 41,000.
Scotland makes more than a third of Europe's PCs and over half its workstations.
Electronics exports are worth more than pounds 3.5bn a year.
In manufacturing output, electronics is second only to Scotland's food and drink sector, with gross ouput of pounds 6.5bn.
Across the economy, Americans have the biggest overseas presence, with 228 plants in Scotland.
