Tesco has backtracked on changes to its Clubcard scheme after facing a backlash from thousands of customers.

The supermarket giant said in an email to customers on Monday that it was changing the value of some of its rewards, which sparked widespread outcry on social media. Many were particularly unhappy as Tesco had not provided any indication of the change prior to its implementation.

The Clubcard scheme offers shoppers the chance to collect points for money they spend in store and online, which can then be changed into vouchers.

Customers can then exchange these vouchers for up to four times their value for things such as restaurant meals at Pizza Express, Prezzo and Zizzi.

Tesco said on Monday that it was simplifying its system and that all vouchers would now be worth three times face value.

However, Britain’s biggest supermarket has now delayed the changes until 10 June following feedback from customers.

“Tesco had seriously misjudged the mood here, especially as, by definition, those hardest hit were its most loyal customers,” said Martin Lewis, founder of MoneySavingExpert.com.

“The fact it has backtracked is good news for its customers, and for its own reputation, as many were talking about changing where they shop after this."

According to Tesco, the move will only affect a minority of Clubcard customers as the majority redeem their vouchers at their face value.

The supermarket said it will inform customers of the change over the next few days.

Customers that have already redeemed their vouchers at three times their value will be refunded, Tesco said.
