1,500 jobs threatened in offshore engineering

A further 1,500 jobs are in jeopardy at the offshore engineering giant AMEC at Wallsend on the River Tyne. An AMEC spokesman said it had paid off 196 men in the past week and without new contracts the workforce would be reduced from the current 3,500 to 2,000 by next spring.
