How can I get the best rate for my rental car?

Price comparison sites are a good place to start but be sure you're comparing like for like. Read the details rather than going on advertised rates to ensure you're not missing hidden extras.

How should I pay?

If possible, pay by credit card before you leave. That means you're protected if the company goes bust.

Is excess insurance worth paying for?

You'll usually get collision damage waiver cover with the car, but you'll still have to pay an excess if you have a smash. This top-up covers the excess and other common exclusions like windscreen and lost keys.

What about other hidden charges?

Watch out for costs associated with filling the tank, child seats, second drivers, delayed/out of hours pick-up or return, cancellation costs, even picking up your car from the airport. Always check the car for damage before you drive it away, no matter what time you touch down.

What happens if I'm late?

Some companies won't wait for delayed flights so check before you agree a contract. If you can't hand the car back to a manned drop-off, secure the keys as far as possible and take plenty of photos as proof.
