Starbucks launches colour-changing cold brew coffee in Asia
It’s all-natural too

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

It was just 10 months ago that the US coffee chain launched a unicorn Frappucino, complete with a garish fuchsia hue and a sprinkling of blue and pink “fairy powders”.
Now, it seems Starbucks has been getting experimental once again with another eccentric caffeinated offering; introducing the Butterfly Lemonade Cold Brew.
Available throughout Asian stores from February 20, the multi-coloured drink will take the form of an iced coffee made with a naturally-blue butterfly pea flower tea and lemonade.
When the tea is mixed with the lemonade, it reacts by turning violet in colour, which, when swirled with the coffee results in an ombre drink that blends from a deep blue to a pale yellow.
Thanks to its colour-changing potential, the tea is a popular ingredient amongst cocktail mixologists and is used to create a multitude of visual effects.
The avant-garde beverage has polarised Starbucks' loyal fan base.
While some have taken to Twitter to praise the drink as being "so good", others have labelled it as "vile" and mocked its slightly wordy name.
"Wait. Starbucks has a new drink called “Butterfly Pea Lemonade Cold Brew? They’re going to make people say that out loud? Seriously?" wrote one user.
The Butterfly Lemonade Cold Brew isn’t the only new drink on Starbucks’ ever-changing menu, there’s also a Macadamia Cocoa Cappuccino coming to Asian stores.
The rich drink will be an indulgent twist on the traditional espresso-based drink with the addition of a nutty chocolate sauce and a graham cracker crunch.
Innovative as they are, Starbucks’ most creative concoctions are typically only available in Asian markets.
At branches in Japan, customers of the coffee chain can order an array of wacky beverages including a Sakura Blossom Frappuccino and a Pink Medley Tea Latte.
Pumpkin spice lattes have never seemed less groundbreaking.
