Today is the International Day of Action Against Violence Towards Women. The UK-based Womankind Worldwide is sponsoring an international forum and launching its new anti-violence campaign primarily for township women in South Africa. Katie Adie, the BBC's chief news correspondent, will be delivering the keynote speech. Also participating will be human rights academics and survivors of violence. The Orchestra of Welsh National Opera is giving a series of concerts at St David's Hall in Cardiff. Tonight's concert will feature music by the contemporary British composer Jonathan Dove, Bernstein's musical Candide and Copland's ballet music suite, Appalachian Spring Suite. The Orchestra of St John's is partying, with its 30th birthday gala concert. The orchestra was started as the Camden Chamber Orchestra by John Lubbock, who was a student of the Royal Academy of Music at the time. Tonight's celebratory concert will include Rossini's overture The Barber of Seville, Beethoven's Symphony No 9 and Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. The London Philharmonic Orchestra's Prokofiev festival begins tonight with the orchestra performing the soundtrack to the 1938 epic film Alexander Nevsky. From the age of 16, the Russian composer Prokofiev managed to build an impressive catalogue of works which included opera, film scores, symphonies, ballets and concerts.
