Cole Sprouse confirms he split from Lili Reinhart in March: ‘I’ll always feel lucky that I had the chance to fall in love’

The timeline of the Riverdale stars’ breakup has never previously been confirmed

Despite huge fan attention on their relationship, Lili Reinhart and Cole Sprouse have always kept details private.

While it was widely known the couple broke up this year and quarantined separately, the timeline had never been shared by either actor.

But now, Sprouse has shared an Instagram post confirming they separated at the start of the year before formally ending their relationship in March.

The actor shared a statement with fans on Instagram, writing: "Lili and I initially separated in January of this year, deciding to more permanently split in March.

"What an incredible experience I had, I’ll always feel lucky and cherish that I had the chance to fall in love."

The post continued: "I wish her nothing but the utmost love and happiness moving forward. All I’ll say about it, anything else you hear doesn’t matter."

Also referencing his ex-girlfriend’s latest work, Sprouse added: "Also her movie comes out soon! I’m sure she’s just as incredible in it as everything else she does. Thanks guys."

Rumours of a split between the couple, who star as Betty Cooper and Jughead Jones in Riverdale, began in May after their co-star Skeet Ulrich answered questions in an Instagram Live.

When asked whether Sprouse — who plays his son on the show — and Reinhart are a cute couple he answered in past tense, saying: “I think they were a very cute couple”.

The actors begun dating in 2017 and were also rumoured to have broken up last summer before reuniting.

Earlier this week Reinhart spoke in a Refinery29 interview about how she has experienced depression this year, calling the last few months the “most emotional” of her life.

The 23-year-old then tweeted about the responses she had received, which assumed she was referring to feelings brought on by her breakup. She explained that the comments “are about the depression I’ve felt over these last few months. Tired of people taking my words out of context and piecing together their own story for clickbait.”

She continued: “I would never speak so candidly about something as personal as a breakup. That’s incredibly private. I was addressing my depression.”

Sprouse has also previously spoken about why he chooses not to talk about his relationship in the media, explaining to People: “Because whether you dismiss those rumours or whether you encourage those rumours it’s giving people who are in my opinion are a bit entitled to your personal life more power, and you have to have spaces for reverence in the industry.

“So I just never talk about it because it’s not anyone’s right to know. People can speculate all they want, people speculate about me with every member of the cast practically, but it’s really no one’s right to know. It’s also sexy, these parts of the relationships that are just yours”, Sprouse added.

Sprouse and Reinhart remain co-stars on Riverdale.
