Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Loving...Jonathan field

This stunning shelving unit crafted from bent oak is the work of furniture designer Jonathan Field. Field, who creates only original pieces, uses hidden colour in the uprights. He's also recently completed five solid oak tables, in salvaged timber. These pieces can be seen at Grand Designs Live at London's Excel centre, which runs until 4 May or online at www.jonathanfield.co.uk.

Hating ...Washing up

Finally the perfect excuse to ban washing up has presented itself. A study by the University of Bonn in Germany reveals that on average 10.5l of water is used per person per day when washing-up by hand, while the best dishwasher only uses 2.27l of water. The water conscious can try the new AEG Electrolux Favorit, priced at £500, which uses sensors to detect the size of the load then automatically adjusts the length of wash.

Buying...Alfresco dining

The time for alfresco dining is almost upon us. And charcoal fans and admirers of gas alike will find it difficult to resist the appeal of this classic West African cooker. It's versatile – it can act as a grill, an oven, or keep food warm – and stylish. The exterior of the stove, which is handmade by a cooperative of craftsmen in Senegal is made from recycled metal. Available for £130, including free delivery from www.henandhammock.co.uk.
