From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Chocolate-lovers have been warned against eating a batch of Galaxy Cookie Crumble because the bars may contain plastic.

Mars Chocolate UK, the firm which manufactures the chocolate bars, is recalling Galaxy Cookie Crumble bars weighing 114g which are marked with the ‘best before’ end date of 16 August 2015. The packets feature the batch codes PB21, PB22 and PB23, and may contain a small piece of white plastic.

The Food Standards Agency said that no other products made by Mars Chocolate UK, including other Galaxy bars, are known to be affected.

To ensure the piece of plastic is not mistakenly eaten, the organisation has sent wholesalers a notice to make their customers aware of the recall.

Those who are concerned can contact the consumer care team for more information by phoning 0800 952 0084, writing to GCC, Freepost, Mars Consumer Care, or emailing: recall@uk.mars.com.

In a statement, Mars UK said: “Mars takes quality and food safety seriously and we apologise for any inconvenience caused to our consumers”.
