From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The UK’s top five best fish and chip restaurants have been announced.

The shortlisted chippies have been selected as part of the 2015 National Fish & Chips Awards, sponsored by Seafish – an organisation which supports a sustainable UK seafood industry.

The five restaurants are from across the UK; from Kent to Scotland. The winner will be honoured with the title of Independent Fish and Chip Restaurant of the Year when announced in January 2015.

Chief Executive of Seafish, Paul Williams said some changes have been made to the usual rules due to the expertise of the competitors:

“We are greatly impressed with the high standard and professionalism of entrants in this year’s awards. It was a challenging task to whittle down our finalists, so much so that we have shortlisted five restaurants instead of the usual three.”

In order to excel this far in the competition, each restaurant has to show what they’re made of during a tough judging process, which includes visits by a mystery shopper.
