Lip gloss is back on the beauty scene for 2018

Super-matte, long-lasting lipsticks that just won’t budge have seen a resurgence of late with everyone from Anastasia Beverly Hills to Huda Beauty and Kat Von D fashioning their own versions.

But it seems they might just be on their way out as the beauty world’s obsession with all things glistening has suddenly shifted from lips to skin.

Instead, an old-school formula you thought you’d left in the early Noughties is starting to take their place: lip gloss.

While the vast majority of us likely haven’t reached for a slick of gloss since our school days, high-shine lacquered lips are officially back on the beauty radar.

But, forget everything you thought you knew about the, quite literally, tacky formula because this vinyl revival is nothing like it used to be.

Too sticky, glittery and hard to reapply back in the day, gloss has received a pretty bad rep over the years but luckily today’s gloss is far softer and less full-on than those of the past.

Rihanna’s Fenty Beauty has wowed beauty buffs everywhere with a 40-shade foundation range, showstopping highlighters and a selection of rainbow lipsticks.

But it’s the Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer that has really stolen the show.

A universal rosy nude shade, the lip gloss is infused with shea butter and a subtle gold shimmer that suits all skin tones while the jumbo-sized applicator makes it easy to slick on.

Similarly, New-York based brand Glossier, which is typically known for its pared-down formulas, has impressed with its version that proves gloss doesn’t have to be sticky and gloppy.

Glass-like and super-hydrating, the goal here is to provide an inviting sheen that looks fresh on the lips, not messy.

If the idea of incorporating a lip gloss back into your everyday routine seems a little daunting then start by wearing it for nights out to begin with.

Alternatively, instead of drenching your pout in the stuff try concentrating the product on the centre of the lips alone. This way, you will give your pout the illusion of fullness without looking too excessive.
