With the festival kicking off today, we recap the best dresses from the iconic film festival.

Cannes Film Festival has always been a glamorous affair. Since its beginnings in 1946, the annual event has attracted an impressive list of Hollywood film stars.

From the likes of Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve and Sophia Loren to modern day icons Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry and Nicole Kidman.

The origins of the festival might be to showcase new films but increasingly the world's attention has turned to the red carpet and the glittering parade of gowns that make their way down it each year.

This year the list of attendees include Sienna Miller, Naomi Watts, Julianne Moore, Eva Longoria, Emma Stone, Salma Hayek, Cate Blanchett, Rooney Mara and Marion Cotillard - all expected to bring their A-game in sartorial stakes.
