Bold-faced: The new way to wear eyeliner this autumn

This season it’s all about having fun and finding your own style

With the weather man predicting warmer temperatures over the next few weeks but the high street stocking up on new season buys, tapping into the latest trends can be quite the minefield at this time of year.

Luckily though, if you’re looking to keep your finger firmly on the fashion pulse, the runways were also full of creative beauty looks you can replicate.

This season, it's black eyeliner that made its mark on the autumn/winter catwalks but not quite as we know it. Alas, it’s finally time to shun feline flicks in favour of something altogether more experimental.

For that you have Pat McGrath to thank who, with a trio of graphic looks, set the trend for black around the eyes come autumn.

At Prada, the make-up artist created a variety of looks for the models but the most eye-catching of all saw dark kohl liner liberally smudged with a flash of sky-blue eyeshadow applied freehand.

Back for Marni, McGrath used kohl once again to create a series of graphic shapes around each model’s eyes and directly on to the water line. For the ultimate out-all-night look, the liner was smeared into the skin and paired with lashings of clumpy masacra.

Finally at Versace, the kohl pencil was set aside in favour of a lacquered look that saw thick black vertical wings drawn across the girl’s lids sweeping all the way from the inner corners to the temples.

To re-create the first two looks, the trick is to make sure the eyes are anything but neat. Instead, it’s all about having fun and smudging your liner for an undone, rock ‘n’ roll finish. Just remember to keep the rest of your look refined and super-simple.

For this, we suggest using a pencil eyeliner which is ideal for creating a smokey eye effect. Simply trace it along your lash line and smudge using a brush or the tips of your finger. You can also run it along your waterline for added darkness.

However, if you want to give the Versace peepers a go you’re going to want to approach the method with a lot more precision.

Here, you have the choice of using either a gel liner – great for achieving a clean line and the creamy consistency is super-easy to work with – or a liquid liner – ideal for defined swoops or flicks and available in a range of widths.
