1 Disney, pounds 9.95 Traditional baseball cap shape with a high structured crown, which means that those with a small head will look like a Tefal man. Suitable for kids, as it's extremely sturdy, and adults who don't mind looking like a berk. Part of a range of Disney characters. From the Disney Store, 140- 144 Regent Street, London W1. Marks out of 10: 4 2 Cleveland Indians, pounds 13.50 This needs some serious bending into shape before it looks lived in. It's made from navy wool, so perhaps a bit sweaty for summer. Another problem may be that it only comes in one size - a large one - and the strip of plastic poppers at the back doesn't help much. Wins points for pseudo-authenticity though. From the Hat Shop, 58 Neal Street, London WC2 (0171-836 6718; can supply mail order). Marks out of 10: 5

3 Gardener's Cap, pounds 6.99 Comes in a farmer's welly green with yellow lettering. The slogan rather limits it to garden-wear; others in the range include "Practising for retirement" and "King of the garden". Has a plastic popper strap from which muddy finger marks can be easily washed. Sturdy cotton, too. From Selfridges, Oxford Street, London W1. Marks out of 10: 6

4 Silver mesh cap, pounds 18.95 The fashion babes' option, more suited to clubland than Wimbledon. The silver gauze makes it cool and airy, useful under strobe lights but not very practical as a sunshade. Also available in black, white and tan. Elastic strap at the back. From the Hat Shop, details as before. Marks out of 10: 7, if you like that sort of thing 5 Oxbow, pounds 29 This is in the sort of check that American tourists' shorts are made of. It looks like wool, but is in fact heavy cotton. The Velcro strap at back tends to snag your hair, but overall likely to be a winner, especially with surfing dudes. From Harrods, Knightsbridge, London SW1. Marks out of 10: 9

6 Adidas, pounds 11.50 Scarlet, softly structured cap in cotton. Absolutely brilliant. You can tuck it in your pocket or leave it in the bottom of your bag and it will still be in a fit state to plonk back on. Hand wash. Buckle strap at the back. Available in a selection of colours from branches of John Lewis nationwide. Marks out of 10: 10
