From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Robert Dyas, the home appliance store, has released its Christmas advert – and people aren’t sure how to feel about it.

The advert, released on 10 December, is titled ‘We’re Robert Dyas and we’re gay. And straight. And bi…’.

Throughout the video, Robert Dyas staff members and customers are seen introducing themselves as gay, straight or bi while shopping.

At one point, one of the staff members gestures towards a Christmas tree, and says: “Look at this Christmas tree. It’s perfect for a gay person. Or a straight person.”

Another is then seen holding a drill, and says: “This drill would work a treat in a straight person’s home. Or a gay person’s.”

The video ends with all the people featured in the video saying: “Robert Dyas: where gays and straights can buy drills, and much, much more.”

Some think the advert is a work of genius:

Others think it doesn't go far enough:

Most people are very confused:

Twitter user Nicky's daughter seems to have cracked it:

'Red House' refers to an American furniture company by the same name that made a local advert in 2009 with similarities to this Robert Dyas advert - except they use "black and white" people instead of "gays and straights".

In the 2009 advert, one Red House staff member lies on a sofa and says: "Look at this sofa. It's perfect for a black person. Or a white person."

Another is seen lying on a bed, and says: "This mattress is perfect for a white person. Or a black person."

It would seem Robert Dyas is parodying this advertisement, which some say is also a parody.
