Help a Hungry Child: Deliveroo donates £75,000 to The Independent's Christmas appeal

Funds from food delivery app will help The Felix Project tackle hidden hunger in primary schools

The company’s support will help establish a new programme in schools across London and beyond (Evening Standard)

Deliveroo has stepped forward to help Britain’s deprived schoolchildren by backing The Independent’s Help a Hungry Child Christmas appeal.

The food delivery app has pledged a total of £75,000 towards the campaign, which is raising money for The Felix Project to help ensure primary school children don’t go hungry.

“The moment we heard about the Help a Hungry Child appeal, Deliveroo wanted to play a part,” said Will Shu, the company’s founder and chief executive.

“I founded Deliveroo in London and it’s from here that we are on a mission to create the world’s best food delivery service, and give more people access to great food.

“Deliveroo is donating directly ourselves, we’ll help our customers give too, and I urge everyone to help. No child in this, the greatest city in the world, should go hungry – especially at Christmas.”

Deliveroo’s riders collect food from restaurants and deliver it to local customers. Since being founded in 2013 the company has expanded to operate in more than 200 cities across 12 countries, working with more than 30,000 restaurants. Customers will be able to contribute to the donation using the app, while Deliveroo will also be using its new delivery-only kitchens, Deliveroo Editions, to deliver food to the hungry this Christmas.

The Independent is fundraising for The Felix Project, the food poverty and food surplus charity founded by ESI media’s chairman, Justin Byam Shaw. Its vans collect food from supermarkets and other retailers and deliver it to front-line charities, who use it to prepare hot, affordable, nutritious meals.

The money raised will go towards helping primary schools provide balanced and nutritious food for schoolchildren, in the wake of shocking statistics showing that an estimated 500,000 children go to school hungry across the UK.

“We are delighted to have Deliveroo onboard with such a generous donation,” said The Felix Project’s head of fundraising, Kristina Spindler. “Ordering a Deliveroo has become a beloved weekly fixture for many Londoners, and it’s fantastic to see the company supporting our Help a Hungry Child appeal.

“Their support will be used to establish our new programme in providing Felix Market Stalls at disadvantaged schools across London – to enable children and their families to take home a selection of fresh fruit and vegetables at the end of the school day. It is our hope that our Help a Hungry Child appeal will be established in 120 of London’s most deprived schools over the next two years, benefiting more than 50,000 children and their families.”
