Veteran videogame developer David Braben believes the birth of videogames has not yet taken place.

The creator of Elite - which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year - says people will look back on the current videogame industry and view the years so far as the "building blocks" of the industry.

He compares gaming with the pre-1930s film industry, believing games are the same stage of maturity.

"Most people would agree the movie industry as we know it today began in the 1930s," he said.

"It was then that film began to take off. People were starting to sit down and watch films for the enjoyment of their narrative and it was less about being amazed at explosions and trains coming at the screen."

He added: "This is very much the case with games now. I truly believe we have yet to see what gamers some decades into the future will understand as a videogame."
