Lewis Hamilton starts from pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix with championship rival Sebastian Vettel down in fourth after an action-packed qualifying session.

Two thunderstorms hit the Hungaroring that shook up qualifying, and brought the best out of Hamilton as he left it late to snatch pole away from Mercedes teammate Valttero Bottas, who starts alongside him in second. Kimi Raikkonen claimed third, having at one point looked on course for his first pole in over a year, meaning both Ferraris start behind the Mercedes’ at a track that is supposed to favour them.

Red Bull endured a nightmare day as Max Verstappen could only manage seventh, but at least he made it out of Q2 whereas teammate Daniel Ricciardo failed to do so, leaving him in a lowly 13th. Fernando Alonso starts 11th in the McLaren on what is his 37th birthday, looking to bounce back from another disappointing day.

All the drivers have gathered at the front of the grid for a minute's silence for former Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne, who sadly lost his life this week after a short illness. It's been a particularly hard weekend for the Ferrari team, and you would not begrudge them a victory today as a result.

Just 10 minutes to go until lights out. The cars fire into life, and the drivers are starting to climb into the cockpit and plug into the relevant cables and sockets that are needed for the race. They are all trying to stay as cool as possible though, with today's race set to be a hot one. What a difference 24 hours makes.

Things to look out forStrategyIt's looking like a two-stopper for the field, but the likes of Force India may try to one-stop as they start deep in the field while teams such as McLaren and Red Bull are looking for large tyre degradation to force three-stoppers and the dreaded cliff.

WeatherIt's going to be a dry race, with yesterday's thunderstorms blown away to allow glorious sunshine to bake Budapest.

TacticsIf Mercedes get away cleanly, don't be surprised to see Hamilton try and break away and use Bottas as a rear buffer. The Finn has been the quicker in the dry so far this weekend, but last time out in Germany proved that team tactics will come into play if needed. If Ferrari can jump one or both of the Mercs off the line, they could disappear into the distance, so from a racing point of view it's worth Mercedes getting away in the lead.

That third row looks pretty tasty indeed, with Carlos Sainz in the Renault starting ahead of the Toro Rosso of Pierre Gasly. With Brendon Hartley also inside the top 10, it's the first time that Toro Rosso have had both drivers through to Q3.

Tyre update

Only Vettel and Sainz are on the soft tyres, with the rest of the top 10 on the ultrasofts - having had free pick after the entire field set their best Q2 times on inters yesterday. Will that affect the race? It means that Vettel could go very, very deep into the race before pitting.
