Spending more time indoors due to the coronavirus pandemic has meant we are all looking for ways to spruce up our interiors and there’s one trend in particular that’s been making a steady appearance in the homes of some of our favourite Instagram accounts.
Feathery, ethereal and affordable, we are, of course, talking about pampas grass.

While dried flowers were undoubtedly one of the biggest interiors trends of 2020, it is these tall, textured stems that have really acquired mass appeal, with more than 312,000 posts under the hashtag #pampasgrass on Instagram. It’s also crept into other elements of our lives, making an appearance at product launches, decorating our favourite shops and hotels and even becoming the go-to bloom of choice for boho weddings.
In fact, it’s become so popular that some councils in England have had to issue warnings to residents not to pick pampas grass, after people were caught stealing it from coastlines and front gardens.
But why is pampas enjoying such a resurgence? After falling out of favour in the 1970s when rumours spread that having the plant on display meant you were a swinger, it has gradually found its way back into our homes due to its versatility and long-lasting nature.
Not only can the plant’s neutral colours and textured stems be easily incorporated into any interior-design style, be it boho, glam, industrial or rustic, but it is also super practical. Because it is dried, pampas does not require light or water and, unlike plastic faux foliage, it won’t harm the planet either.

It stocks a range of furniture and accessories, but in recent years it has also become a one-stop shop for all your dried flower needs. And, yes, that includes pampas grass.

If it’s super-fluffy stems that you’re after, we recommend picking up the extra large bunch (£38), which includes three neutral stems. A business that was born during the pandemic, Three Sisters Farm is the brainchild of Philippa and Jessica who, after being made redundant from their jobs, took a leap of faith and set up their own boutique specialising in sustainable dried flowers.
As well as beautiful dried flower bouquets (from £22), Three Sisters Farm sells an impressive variety of pampas grasses, catering to all tastes. For the more adventurous, there are blue and pink stems (£15), while the tall skinny bunches (£20) are a subtle way to introduce dried flowers into your home.

A veritable treasure trove of independent sellers, Etsy is the place to go if you want to get your hands on some pampas while supporting a small business.
While there are hundreds of sellers to choose from, one of our top picks is The Pampas Life, which creates dried-flower and grass arrangements that can also be made to order. We love this mini white pampas bunch (£10) for adding to decorative vases, but you can also pick up larger stems too, like the fluffy pampas (£25), which includes three 60cm stems.

Cox & Cox was founded in 2001 by Fiona Cox, a stylist and presenter on the BBC’s home makeover series Home Front, and 20 years later it is still home to a stylish range of eclectic yet timeless pieces for your living spaces.

Over the years, Instagram has transformed from a simple photo-sharing service to a business-building platform.
A quick search for pampas on the app will reveal a host of small businesses selling dried blooms and all you need to do is send them a direct message to buy. With more than 42,000 followers, The Pampas Collection is one of the most popular pampas stores on Instagram and has prices for its range clearly listed in a handy highlight, starting at £14 for one stem.
Another small business to follow is Pampas by the Sea, which is based in Cornwall and sells pampas, cotton stems and bunny tails.
A UK-based flower studio, Pampas & Bloom was founded by two sisters from Leeds who both have backgrounds in interiors and furniture design. On the website you can find everything from pre-made dried flower bouquets to pampas bunches in a variety of colours.
If you’re looking to make a real statement, this is the store for you. In addition to traditional, neutral pampas, like this gold bunch (£36), Pampas & Bloom also sells the stems in grey (from £48), hot pink (£76) and, our favourite, black (from £50).
