This election is still a dead heat, according to most polls. In a fight with such wafer-thin margins, we need reporters on the ground talking to the people Trump and Harris are courting. Your support allows us to keep sending journalists to the story.

The Independent is trusted by 27 million Americans from across the entire political spectrum every month. Unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock you out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. But quality journalism must still be paid for.

Help us keep bring these critical stories to light. Your support makes all the difference.

Over the past year, spending more time at home has meant our sofas have really been put through their paces. They have transformed from the spot where we’d relax and watch some TV, into where we nap, eat, work and make video calls.

Whether your couch is past its sell-by date. or you just want to give your living room a Zoom-worthy makeover, choosing a new sofa can feel overwhelming. But the good news is that a new range has just launched that promises to make your decision-making a whole lot easier.

British furniture retailer DFS and the popular television series Grand Designs have joined forces to create a collection of living room seating that’s both sustainable and stylish, spanning everything from cosy cuddle chairs to velvet footstools and corner loungers.

Every piece in the collection has a sustainability angle, with all elements made from recycled or recyclable materials, including seat cushion fillings made from recycled plastics, reusable steel springs and fabric made from recycled polyester yarns.

As for the designs, there are four styles to choose from – kent, edinburgh, tenby and farnham – as well as a stylish accent chair dubbed the padstowe. Each features clean, contemporary lines in sumptuous fabrics. Swatches are available in eight different shades across three fabrics (chenile, weave and velvet), giving you plenty of choice for your sofa set-up.

While the aspirational feel and sustainability element might lead you to believe that the new collection has a premium price point, you’d be wrong. In an attempt to make its latest range accessible to as many households as possible, DFS has ensured that prices start from £449 and, as part of a partnership with Clearabee, they are also helping to minimise costs by launching a scheme where your old sofa can be collected from your home and recycled as much as possible.

With so many beautiful designs on offer, we’ve rounded up our top picks from the range which will suit almost any living space, whether you’re a fan of Scandi chic, mid-century design or maximalism.

You can trust our independent round-ups. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections. This revenue helps us to fund journalism acrossThe Independent.

Kent velvet cuddler sofa: £899, Dfs.co.uk

(DFS)

Combining an architectural aesthetic with sumptuous, squared arms and quilting details, the kent cuddler sofa will make a striking addition to any living room.

Available in eight colours and three different finishes, our favourite combination for this style is green velvet, which would complement both light and dark spaces. The fabric is made using Repreve yarn, which transforms plastic bottles into fibres that are then woven into a material. For a retro-inspired finishing touch, decorate with a contrasting orange cushion.

Edinburgh chenille armchair: £649, Dfs.co.uk

(DFS)

An armchair is the perfect accompaniment to any statement sofa, and this one is more than just a living room staple.

With luxuriously soft seats and delicately splayed arms, the mid-century-style chair is perfect for those with discerning tastes, and delivers a cosy feel to your home interiors. For a piece that will fit with most decor styles, opt for it in super-soft cream chenille or, if you want to add a pop of colour, go for showstopping yellow.

Farnham weave left hand facing grand chaise sofa: £1,999, Dfs.co.uk

(DFS)

If you have a larger family or like to put your feet up while watching TV, this could be the couch for you.

Generously proportioned, the sofa is designed with contemporary touches such as tailored arm-panel detailing that has an almost architectural feel. We think this style would work best in a soft shade of light grey, adorned with scatter cushions for a punch of colour.

Padstowe velvet accent chair: £599, Dfs.co.uk

(DFS)

Alongside the four main ranges, the DFS x Grand Designs collection also includes the padstowe – an accent style that gives you the opportunity to embrace the mismatched trend with a chair that’s a little different from your suite.

With clean, linear lines in a stylish wingback style, this piece will give any room a sophisticated feel. It comes in many upholstery colours but our top pick is this deep midnight blue velvet.

Tenby weave footstool: £499, Dfs.co.uk

(DFS)

A footstool adds a touch of luxury to any living space and, when it comes to unwinding at the end of the day, there’s little more satisfying than putting our feet up on a fancy pouffe.

While simple in its design, the tenby footstool promises to be one of the hardest working pieces of furniture you own as, due to its plump cushioning, it can also be used as an extra seat when you’re finally allowed to invite friends over.
