Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.More than being purely functional, a good mirror can create a bit of drama in a simple space, add some depth and light to a dimensionally-challenged room or put the finishes touch to a lovingly-crafted interior. We’ve rounded up our favourites, from antique-style distressed wood to sleek metal frames, via some clever storage solutions and, of course, a bit of that much-loved Scandi style. These are the results.
1. House Doctor DK Black Framed Mirror With Shelf: £195, bodieandfou.com
Owned by two French sisters, Bodie and Fou’s carefully curated website is a great place to find a mixture of contemporary and vintage design in simple white, black, wood and linen. This mirror, complete with shelf at the bottom to store lotions and potions, is one of our favourites and is also available in landscape.
2. Stockholm Mirror: £60, ikea.com
Homeware giants Ikea have a knack for producing pieces of furniture that look far more stylish than their price tags suggest, and this is one of them. The frame of the Stockholm mirror slopes out at the bottom to form a ledge, just big enough for a small vase or a few bottles, and is covered in walnut veneer.
3. Small Round Copper Hanging Mirror: £35, oliverbonas.com
Hanging mirrors are everywhere at the moment and while leather versions have something of the charming school satchel about them, we prefer the sleek copper finish (and the price) of this from Oliver Bonas, which has an almost nautical, porthole-like feel.
4. White Beaded Antique Mirror: £160, grahamandgreen.co.uk
This French-style arch mirror with beading detail has a beautiful slightly distressed white wood finish and would look perfect above a mantlepiece. It’s also available in black and gold and in standing full-length versions.
5. Kartell Only Me Mirror: from £122.40, utilitydesign.co.uk
We’ve already enthused about Kartell’s iconic Ghost chair, but now it’s the turn of this collection of mirrors, also designed by Philippe Starck. The transparent polycarbonate frame comes several bright jewel colours; we suggest hanging the fuschia, emerald green and white in a row - if you’ve got the budget that is.
6. Brunel Lean Mirror With Hanging Space: £225, heals.com
British designer Rob Scarlett’s standing mirror is sure to be making many an appearance on Pinterest ‘home inspiration’ boards soon with its mix of industrial and Scandi style. Storage enthusiasts will love the hanging space and shelf stored behind it and the slight upwards tilt of the glass is flattering, a la Topshop changing rooms, too.
7. Eichholtz Dominion Mirror Rustic: £198, houseology.com
The Moroccan-style shape of this wooden mirror from the world-inspired Dutch brand makes it a perfect fit for a Bohemian-inspired room. It has a wide bevelled edge around the glass, following the shape of the frame, and is bigger than it looks, at 50x50cm.
8. Dassie Reclaimed Mirror: £64, amara.com
Made with reclaimed wood, no two Dassie mirrors are exactly the same, meaning that you get a unique piece — and that dimensions vary, but are roughly 50x40cm. The accessible price makes this one a great piece for the first-time home-owner or renter.
9. Floating Wood Floor Mirror: £299, westelm.co.uk
A large leaning mirror is a really simple way of adding some drama and dimension to a room, plus they’re perfect for renters with fussy landlords that make wall-hanging mirrors a no-go. This one from US brand West Elm is 183cm tall and is available in two shades of wood.
10. Elements Optimal Ice Cream Mirror: £124, skandivis.co.uk
Inject a bit of fun into a kid’s — or big kid’s — room with this unusual lolly-shaped mirror, with rose gold blocking and wooden ‘stick’, from the Danish brand. We reckon it will go brilliantly with bright, ice-cream pastels. They also do balloon-shaped ones, if you don’t fancy a Fab.
Verdict:
Bodie and Fou’s sleek, modern design is our favourite piece for a bedroom or bathroom, while West Elm’s large floor mirror easily add big impact to a room and can easily be moved around when you fancy a change and those on a budget can’t go wrong with trusty Ikea’s Stockholm.
