10 best men's jumpers
Finally, the cold weather is coming. Make sure you have knitwear to see you through the icy spell
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. We’ve found jumpers to help you up your sartorial game this January.
On this list are a mix of ultra-useful knits in versatile colours from the high street, alongside some more luxurious investment pieces – both classic and statement – that you’ll be wearing for many winters to come.
Some are one hundred per cent wool, or have a high wool-count to keep you super cosy, others are cotton mixes you can layer-up during a cold snap.
You can trust our independent reviews. We may earn commission from some of the retailers, but we never allow this to influence selections, which are formed from real-world testing and expert advice. This revenue helps to fund journalism across The Independent.
1. Benetton Jacquard Sweater: £45, United Colors of Benetton
Benetton started life as a knitwear specialist, and its jumpers are well worth a look. This one, in a cool monochrome palette, is over 70 per cent wool so will keep you seriously cosy, yet you’ll still get change from fifty quid.
2. Next Roll Neck: £22, Next
It’s hard to ignore the fact that roll necks are everywhere this season. Here’s a classic cotton-mix one that’s super-easy to wear, and you’ll be glad of that high neck when the mercury drops.
3. Folk Waffle-Knit Wool-Blend Sweater: £160, Mr Porter
Folk has long stuck to an ethos of avoiding trends in favour of well-made, contemporary staples. Our pick of the latest knitwear collection is this textured jumper in suits-all navy. There’s some cotton in the mix, so it’s soft against skin.
4. Whistles Camouflage-Patterned Sweater: £145, Whistles
Whistles’ menswear has gained a dedicated following since its launch, and while there are some plainer pieces in the latest collection, we like this standout but still versatile merino wool jumper in cool camo.
5. Topman Mustard Yoke Texture Crew: £32, Topman
If you live in black, greys and blues, maybe it’s time to give yellows a go. This cotton mix, crew-neck jumper with a textured top half is in a very wearable shade and is a wallet-friendly way to ensure your January wardrobe cuts the mustard (sorry).
6. Norse Projects Colour Block: £115, Norse Projects
Made in Scotland from native yarn that’s been brushed to give it a “hairy” appearance, this lambswool jumper in striking block colours looks and feels just the thing you need to combat the incoming Arctic blast. It’s made for the Copenhagen-based Norse Projects, so you’re investing in a bit of Scandi cool, to boot.
7. Christopher Raeburn Hanging Orangutan Knit Crew: £225, Christopher Raeburn
Followers of fashion will have heard of hot Brit designer Christopher Raeburn, who was showcasing his autumn/winter range week as part of London Collections: Men. You can snap up a knit from his spring offering, featuring his latest mascot: the orang-utan, seen here on a relaxed-fit crew.
8. John Smedley Marcus Merino Wool Sweater: £140, Mr Porter
If you’re looking to invest in knitwear – and we’re talking a jumper that will last years if you look after it – try British luxury brand John Smedley. Its classic knits are made from the highest quality materials, like this rich red sweater made from New Zealand-sourced merino wool that’s both fine and hard-wearing.
9. Chest Stripe Drifter Sweater: £50, Lands' End
This one from US casualwear brand is crafted from hard-wearing but soft ringspun cotton that you can wear all year round. It’s a classic fit, so there’s plenty of room for layers.
10. Uniqlo Cashmere Cable Crew Neck Sweater: £29.90, Uniqlo
For affordable, decent quality knits, try Japanese brand Uniqlo. This cotton jumper is blended with five per cent cashmere to make it that bit softer, warmer and more luxe-feeling. Comes in range of colours including this wear-with-everything grey.
Verdict
Try Uniqlo for good-value staples. Its cashmere-blend pieces are well worth seeking out. If you can stretch to it, John Smedley’s knits are a sound investment
