12 best boys' jumpers
Keep them cosy despite the chill this winter
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. No need for children to get chilly with our recommendations of this winter’s best woollies. With our boys’ round-up, we’ve got all ages and all styles covered so that tiny tots through to teenagers can wrap up warm in style.
1. John Lewis Large Dog Jumper: from £16, johnlewis.com
Anyone would think 2015 was the year of the dog, such is its prominence on children’s jumpers this season. We like this cheery one, that manages to look cool, even on older boys, and as such, it suits children aged two right through to 12 years old.
2. Vertbaudet Boys’ Printed Sweater: £15.20, vertbaudet.co.uk
Available from two to eight years, this jumper has a high neck, which means it will keep boys warm even when they go out without a scarf. The press-stud fastening is easier for little boys to manage than buttons and it’s nice and warm without being too heavy.
3. JoJo Maman Bebe Cable Knit Jumper: £20, jojomamanbebe.co.uk
Available in two different blues or beige, this lamb’s wool-mix cable knit jumper is a long-standing bestseller. It does for casual or smart wear and it’s made really well. Available from six months to six years, we just wish they made it for older boys too.
4. Boden Chunky Jumper: £30, boden.co.uk
This machine-washable jumper is available in the contrasting colours of grey and orange or blue and yellow. The five per cent cashmere makes it feel super-soft, whilst the 95 per cent cotton keeps it practical and long-lasting. Available for two to 12 years.
5. Next Multicar Crew Neck: from £13, next.co.uk
This is an adorable little crew neck jumper for boys aged three months to six years. Featuring fun and colourful cars on the top half and a plain navy bottom half with white specs, it washes well and is good value for the quality.
6. Grey Ombre Shawl Neck Jumper: from £14, mothercare.com
No need for little chaps to feel cold this winter with this snug, basket-knit jumper that’s designed with a nice cosy shawl neck and single button. Not that little ones will care, but the ombre effect seems to be everywhere this autumn. More importantly though, this one washes well. Available from 18 months to eight years.
7. J by Jasper Conran Mock Layered Jumper: From £18, debenhams.com
No need to splash out on a shirt with this jumper that has a mock shirt layer showing at the neck and bottom. Pair it with jeans or chinos for a weekend look and you’ll get no complaints from your child on the itchiness front as it’s nice and comfy to wear. Available from four to 14 years-old.
8. Weird Fish Texas Boys Macaroni Ecru: £29.95, weirdfish.co.uk
This high-quality jumper comes in the signature texture that this company has built its reputation on and which boys really enjoy wearing. There’s an adult version too, just in case dad winds up liking it as well. Remember to clean it on a cold-wash programme.
9. Monsoon Graham Giraffe Intarsia Jumper: £26, monsoon.co.uk
Who can resist Graham the giraffe, with his adorable face and bow tie? Available from three months to eight years, this sweater is bound to bring a smile to younger kids and there’s a union jack on the back too, making it a good present to send overseas for Christmas.
10. St Berts Sweatshirt: £26, stberts.com
This company, which launched last year, specialises in unisex sweatshirts made from soft but durable cotton. They come in a range of colour combinations and are available from three to 12 years. Great for weekends at home or when kids are feeling active.
11. Fatface Shark Hooded Jumper: £25, fatface.com
Yes, it’s yet another animal motif (they’re all the rage this season, if you hadn’t guessed), but no cutesy faces on this good-quality pullover. Rather, a great white shark appears from the bottom of the jumper, not unlike the 1970s advert for Jaws, with the tail showing on the back. Available from four to 14 years.
12. Nutmeg Bike Print Sweat: From £7, morrisons.com
This is great value for a long-sleeved crew neck sweater that will last boys aged five to 13 through the winter on colder days. The grey colouring means it’s easy to match with most trousers and the bike print is appealing to all ages. Hurry, though, as it’s only available until mid-October.
Verdict
The Fatface Shark Hooded Jumper is both warm and fun, making it a particularly good gift for Christmas. For smaller boys, JoJo Maman Bebe’s Cable Knit Jumper is superbly made, especially for the price.
