Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Whether you’re after luxe 100-per-cent wool pieces or are buying on a budget, these blankets and throws will all add a certain something to your room.
1. Bronte by Moon Spot Throw: £89, johnlewis.com
Bronte by Moon know what they’re doing when it comes to blankets. Under one guise or another, the company has been producing wool products from their mill in Yorkshire since 1837. This spotty design in soft merino lambswool will add colour to your sofa or bed without being too in-yourface about it. 185 x 140cm.
2. Ellie Ellie Checked Recycled Wool Blankets: £24, notonthehighstreet.com
These Welsh-made blankets are spun from recycled wool, so no two designs are the same. At 120 x 150cm, they are smaller than some here so they are ideal for snuggling up on smaller sofas.
3. Zara Home Paisley Wool Blanket: £79.99, zarahome.com
Can’t find a nice blanket in your colour scheme? The chances are, Zara Home will have one that fits the bill. They have a few in bright pink colour ways – this one with stitched edges is just the thing to inject some colour into a room.
4. Tesco Knitted Stripe Throw: £20, tesco.com
Here’s a simple stripy throw from Tesco’s spring range that will add a bit of interest to your sofa and keep you cosy. Made from acrylic, it doesn’t have the potential itch-factor of wool. 160cmx125cm.
5. Triangle New Wool Blanket: £69, trianglestore.co.uk
There are lots of lovely 100-per-cent wool blankets around, but these from the East-London based shop, are a good price for the size (150cmx183cm including fringing). The bright colours make us think of spring, too.
6. Eleanor Pritchard Signal Blanket: £240, hauslondon.com
If you like bold geometrics and have a bit of money to spend, Eleanor Pritchard’s designs are super-striking. This reversible one 100-percent wool one is apparently influenced by sound waves and radio transmissions. Whatever the inspiration, it will stand out on your sofa or bed. The blanket stitch edging gives it a more finished look than some on the list.
7. Avoca Multi-coloured Lambs wool Throw: From £55, houseoffraser.co.uk
Irish-based Avoca’s superbright lambswool throws made in their mill in Wicklow sell all over the world. We reckon wrapping yourself up in this one will at least make you feel like you’re somewhere bright and beautiful, rather than the UK during a cold snap. Comes in two sizes.
8. Ikea Ryssby Throw: £35, ikea.com
This is a good price for a large piece with a high wool to synthetic ratio (it’s 77 per cent wool). Bold red and blue stripes will mean it will catch the eye but the beige stops it from being too obtrusive in your colour scheme.
9. H&M Textured Blanket: £24.99, hm.com
The Swedish high street store’s simple blankets look more expensive than the price tag and are lighter than wool if you find the natural stuff too hot. They also do a good scandi-style herringbone-patterned one too. Helpfully, you can also put these ones in the washing machine – ideal if you’re prone to hot chocolate spillages.
10. Wallace Sewell Honeycomb Throw: From £235, wallacesewell.com
Wallace Sewell’s pieces are the sort you’ll buy now and keep for the next 20 years. Woven from 100-per-cent lambs’ wool in bold colours, these UK-made textured blankets are bright but versatile in one very cosy package. Available in two sizes.
11. Graham and Green Mohair Pom Pom Throw: £59, grahamandgreen.co.uk
If you prefer block colours to patterns, these mohair throws with bright fringing make a statement. Choose from grey, fuchsia or green with contrasting pom poms. (130cmx170cm)
Verdict:
If money was no object, we’d go for one of Wallace Sewell’s waffle-textured throws. Ellie Ellie’s checked recycled numbers are good quality for the price if you only need a smaller cover-up. And anyone looking to do Scandi-chic on a budget should head to H&M.
