The Mandalorian: Jon Favreau says fans can still call Baby Yoda his nickname despite name reveal

Character formerly known as The Child had his name revealed during second series

The Mandalorian showrunner Jon Favreau says that fans can still call Baby Yoda by his nickname, despite his real name being revealed.

Throughout the first series of the Star Wars TV show, the character – a 50-year-old infant from the same species as Yoda – was known in promotional material as The Child, but was quickly nicknamed Baby Yoda by fans.

However, in episode five of season two, his name was finally revealed to be Grogu.

While some fans said that the name was “perfect” for the character, others insisted that they would keep referring to him as Baby Yoda.

Appearing on Good Morning America, The Mandalorian creator Jon Favreau discussed the character’s real name, explaining that it had been written into the script “from very early on”.

“But of course, everybody knows Grogu as Baby Yoda. Which, by the way, is fine with all of us,” he said.

“We still call him Baby Yoda too, but he prefers to be called Grogu. If you notice in the show, he perks up a lot when you say his name.”

The Mandalorian season two came to an end last Friday (18 December), with the finale featuring the “amazing” return of two original Star Wars characters.

A post-credits scene also showed Boba Fett, played by Temuera Morrison, taking over the criminal operation once led by Jabba the Hutt and subsequently his second-in-command Bib Fortuna.

It was later announced that he would be given his own spin-off series on Disney+ titled The Book of Boba Fett.

The series will be released in December in place of a third season of The Mandalorian.
