The 1927 sci-fi epic Metropolis, directed by Fritz Lang, has long been one of the most influential films of the 20th Century, inspiring a musical theatre adaptation and numerous artists.

With remakes being all the rage in Hollywood at the moment, it should, therefore, come as no surprise that the seminal silent film is being remade into a TV series.

And who better to take on the colossal task than Mr. Robot creator/showrunner Sam Esmail, a famously hands-on writer/director having directed the entirety of Mr/ Robot season two.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Email will act as showrunner for the Universal Cable Productions, which will reportedly hit screens in two to three years.

Like the source material, Metropolis will focus on a dystopian future in which the wealthy rule from their skyscrapers. Two lovers, fed up with the system, try to bring its demise.

Despite being highly influential, the original film was met by negative reviews from contemporary critics, only receiving acclaim in the years since.

Esmail and Universal Cable Productions have yet to comment on the situation.
