Your support makes all the difference.Brexit claimed a new victim in the form of Marmite today, with Tesco removing a number of popular products such as Marmite, Bovril and PG Tips from its online store following a price row with supplier Unilever over the plunging pound.
The nation was understandably distraught, rushing to physical stores to stock up ahead of the Great Marmite Famine of 2017.
There’s definitely something dystopian about a world with no Marmite, so it’s quite fitting that the breakfast spread is to feature in an upcoming episode of dark drama Black Mirror.
“There's a scene involving Marmite in a London-set episode of the new Black Mirror series. Meant to be near-future. NOW A UTOPIAN PIPE DREAM,” co-creator Charlie Brooker tweeted, adding: “(That's not a joke btw, there really is a scene with some Marmite in it. Not being fed to a robot or anything like that, mind.)”
It is thought a number of supermarkets are also embroiled in the row with Netherlands-based Unilever, which refused to comment on the dispute.
The prospect of a “hard Brexit” has sparked a dramatic fall in the pound’s value compared to the euro and the dollar, and sterling is now at its lowest level against the dollar since 1985.
