Chicago is getting a Friends musical, albeit an unauthorised one.

Titled ‘The One Where They Sing’ and dubbed a ‘musical parody’, the 90-minute show will run from 10 June to 29 July at the MCL Chicago theatre (which is BYOB).

Based on the first season, the musical will make use of in-show songs like Smelly Cat, and also feature Marcel the monkey.

Don’t expect any household name actors as the production is pretty small scale, having snowballed falling an ‘overwhelmingly positive response’ at a sketch comedy festival.

“Friends is that show I watch every night before I go to bed, so naturally, it means a lot to me,” show writer and director Eli Golden told BuzzFeed.

“I am a huge lover of musicals and really wanted to tell a great story while staying true to the source material. This is a musical for fans by the fans, both of Friends and musicals in general.”

“I started writing this musical roughly three years ago and have had the songs stuck in my head ever since.

“Between the cast, the band, and production team, we have stacked this show with funny and talented people, and that atmosphere is infectious.”
