Alec Baldwin: John Oliver and Stephen Colbert have turned chat shows into grand juries

Amid the fallout of John Oliver's heated exchange with Dustin Hoffman, Alec Baldwin has suggested that once "chit chat"-orientated talk shows are becoming too political and accusatory.

"Talk shows were once promotional pit stops for some blithe chit chat about movies, etc," he tweeted through his foundation. "Now the likes of @iamjohnoliver and @StephenAtHome have flipped that and they are beginning to resemble grand juries."

Some in Hollywood have been critical of how Oliver turned a Wag the Dog anniversary screening panel into a confrontation with Hoffman over recent allegations of sexual misconduct, Baldwin retweeting several detractors including actor Michael Rapaport who called the HBO host a "motherf***er" and a "selfish f***".

Baldwin tweeted through his foundation as, on 4 November, his official account posted: "It is with some degree of sadness that I will suspend posting on this Twitter account for a period of time and in the current climate."

"My foundation account, @ABFalecbaldwin , will continue to post re: our work with the arts and environment," he added, though clearly he couldn't resist offering some opinion through it.
