Netflix is rumoured to be returning the shiny-haired, coffee-swilling Gilmore Girls to Stars Hollow for another series nearly eight years after they were last on telly.

The internet has greeted this news with jubilation. It isn’t just that the show which introduced us to Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids, Ghostbusters...oh please let her be available for a return) is being given a chance to rectify its rather rushed final season. It is that in the years since it went out there has been a dearth of female-led TV shows sending positive messages about women.

Orange Is The New Black and The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt aside there almost no big name American TV shows with only female leads.

While Gilmore Girls might not be hard-hitting exactly (there are lots of cosy sweaters, coffee rather than alcohol, longing looks rather than sex scenes and the most dangerous thing that happened was when Rory dropped out of college), what it has in spades is intelligent, witty female characters who might be rather obsessed with their love-lives but are equally happy just being together.

The relationship between the two Lorelais (Lauren Graham plays mother to Alexis Bledel's “Rory”) provides the drama with its heart. Yes they fight, yes Emily Gilmore (Kelly Bishop), Lorelai’s uptight yet oddly loveable mother, throws several spanners in the works and things aren’t always easy. But the three generations of women provide a musical scale of comedy, tragedy and insight that is addictive.

It might be unnaturally jolly and the merits of eating gallons of ice cream and tons of pizza not as nutritionally balanced as their waistlines and skin make it look, but news that Gilmore Girls isn’t being left out on the road (feeling lonely and so cold) will be greeted with screams of “Brazzlefrat” from around the globe.
