The Devil's Larder, Grid Iron at Debenhams
Directed by Ben Harrison, a series of often-sinister scenes, of variable quality and with no narrative other than the theme of food, is played out in appropriate corners. Those include a dim stairwell, a book-lined boardroom and, in the case of the honeymooning wife, a bed at the entrance to the Wedding Service department. A mannequin moves here; a shop assistant stirs to life there; a ghostly figure glides up an escalator.
The versatile cast of four transform themselves into the ghastly "Caledonian community charity challenge" team and then make up a Sixties fondue party, their passions simmering as cheesily as the main dish. Elderly people are masked and voiceless, one encountering a dead loved one in a most surprising way, another providing scientific fodder for a young doctor - which may put you off Jerusalem artichokes. Four skeletons make their way along "the punishing path" to a restaurant where they cross the barriers of taste in devilish style.
Evocative music, including clarsach and voice, accompanies this material, which - though never indigestible - may not be to everyone's taste.
