Album: Dino Saluzzi, El Encuentro (ECM)
Celebrating his 75th birthday, bandoneonist Dino Saluzzi faithfully follows in the steps of his mentor and former colleague Astor Piazzolla.
He keeps faith with his Argentinian musical roots, while bringing in fresh elements: his saxophonist brother Felix, cellist Anja Lechner, and also a full orchestra. "My music must not be too rational – it has to brim with innocence," he says, but at the same time it's very "learned" music, in its conscious echoes of Strauss: the orchestration is lush, but never soupy.
