Album: Civil Wars, Barton Hollow (Columbia)

The recent Grammys awarded them Best Folk Album and Best Country Duo, which tells you that Joy Williams and John Paul White need no introduction (or genre) in the US.

Here, nearly half a year since a splendid Later... performance, their debut album finally sees the light of day. It is a glossy thing that entwines her Californian folky yin around his Southern gothic yang. The title track would take some beating, but there are a fair few others to give it a run for its money.
