Cyrus, 20, became the first artist this year to score a “chart double” after her “Wrecking Ball” single fought off competition from Eminem’s “Berzerk” to retain the No 1 spot whilst her fourth full-length solo release, Bangerz, debuted in the album chart’s top spot.
The former Hannah Montana actress has been the world’s most talked-about pop star since her controversial “twerking” performance at the MTV video music awards in August.
Cyrus’s videos and performances are, according to O’Connor, a measure of how the young singer is being exploited by the music industry. The Irish singer demanded an apology and threatened legal action after Cyrus replied to her open letter with a series of Tweets which appeared to mock her history of bipolar disorder.
Cyrus achieved her first UK No 1 single during the Summer with “We Can’t Stop”. Her previous highest charting album was 2010’s Can’t Be Tamed, which peaked at No 8.
One of Cyrus’s backing dancers at the MTV awards said that their “degrading” performances left her feeling “ashamed” of being a dwarf.
