SXSW confirms more than 50 performing acts

On February 2, the The South by Southwest Music Conference and Festival announced more than 50 of the bands who will perform at the 2010 event, scheduled to take place March 17-21 in Austin, Texas. In additional to headliner Cheap Trick, musicians set to perform include VV Brown (London, England), Spoon (Austin, TX), Balkan Beat Box (Tel Avi, Israel), and The xx (London, England).

Additional confirmed bands include Amaral (Madrid, Spain), Anita Tijoux (Santiago, Chile), Apoptygma Berzerk (Oslo, Norway), Bajofondo (Buenos Aires, ARGENTINA), Black Rebel Motorcycle Club (Los Angeles, CA), Bomba Estereo (Bogota, Colombia), Broken Social Scene (Toronto, Canada), Cymbals Eat Guitars (New York, NY), Hudson Mohawke (Glasgow, SCOTLAND), Invincible (Detroit, MI), jj (Gothenburg, Sweden), Miike Snow (Stockholm, Sweden), and She & Him (Los Angeles, CA).

Performances will take place on the Day Stage at the Austin Convention Center and on more than 80 stages around downtown Austin.

Also announced February 2 are several panel discussions planned for the conference, which will feature Smokey Robinson as keynote speaker. Among highlights: Judy Collins will speak on "Where Goes English Folk Music?," DJ Spooky will discuss the spread of music into established cultural institutions in "Performing Arts: New Frontier for Live Acts," Suzanne Vega will talk about MP3s in "Music Artists: Getting A Digital Ass-Kicking," and Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth will recall early gigs in "CBGBs Stories."

The annual South by Southwest Music and Media Conference & Festival gathers nearly 12,000 members of the international music industry, and almost 2,000 top-notch bands play around Austin during conference week.

Through February 12, SXSW music badges are $700; a platinum badge, which grants access to SXSW music, film, and interactive conferences from March 12-21, is $1,125.
