Marilyn Manson cancels nine shows after being crushed by stage prop in New York

Artist was seen being caught under a stage prop after attempting to climb it near the end of his show in Manhattan

Marilyn Manson has cancelled nine shows after being injured during a concert in New York.

The rock star was performing a cover of "Sweet Dreams" by Eurythmics at the Hammerstein Ballroom in Manhattan when he attempted to climb a large set piece behind him.

Footage showed the moment when the prop - two large guns that appeared to be held together with metal scaffolding - toppled over on top of the artist.

An eye witness told the BBC that Manson lay on stage for up to 15 minutes covered by a black sheet before being carried out by a stretcher and taken to hospital.

Anthony Biscardi said fans at the concert "instantly freaked out".

"He was performing the song "Sweet Dreams". Towards the middle of the song it seemed as though he tried climbing onto a prop," he said.

"The first touch of weight on those poles and it came crashing down onto him."

In video footage posted of the incident, stage crew and band members are seen rushing to lift the prop off Manson, who did not get back up.

A representative told Rolling Stone magazine: "Manson suffered an injury towards the end of his incredible NYC show. He is being treated at a local hospital."

Manson was three dates into a tour supporting his latest album, Heaven Upside Down, which is released on 6 October via Loma Vista/Caroline International records.

An official statement said: "Marilyn Manson is being forced to cancel several of his October dates on his forthcoming US tour.

On Saturday night, the legendary performer suffered an injury on stage towards the end of his set at NYC's Hammerstein Ballroom causing him to cut the show short.

"He was treated for the injury at a local hospital and will be recuperating at home in Los Angeles.

"The shows from Boston, 2 October through Houston, 14 October will be rescheduled for a later date. Manson hopes to return to the stage soon, more details on upcoming shows to follow."
