John Oliver on the moment he didn't get to meet Beyonce

John Oliver has spoken about his nervousness over appearing near the space where Beyonce would be photoshopped in for a Lion King cast shoot.

Appearing on Stephen Colbert’s The Late Show, the TV host and actor – who voices Zazu in Disney’s live-action remake – spoke about his experience on the film before addressing the photo.

Most fans, or anyone with a good eye for Photoshop, will have noticed that it is fairly obvious Beyonce was not present with the rest of the cast for the official photo. Yet Oliver still seemed thrilled at appearing next to the space where she would be pictured.

“I remember Chiwetel [Ejiofor] was sitting in the front,” he began. “He said: ‘You need to be careful where your foot is,’ And I looked down and there was just this piece of tape on the floor with Beyoncé’s name written on it.

“It was like an electrical reaction, to go, ‘Oh s**t!’ Just the future presence of Beyoncé was so intimidating.”

Oliver joked about his expression in their cast photo, explaining: “What I’m doing is imagining that I am about to be put into a photo with Beyoncé one day, and that was nerve-wracking enough.”

The Independent's film critic Clarisse Loughrey recently spoke with a number of The Lion Kings cast, as well as director Jon Favreau and composer Hans Zimmer. You can read her review of the film here.

The Lion King is in cinemas now.
