Doja Cat apologises after song containing racial slur resurfaces

‘That’s not my character, and I’m determined to show that to everyone moving forward’

Doja Cat has released a statement after multiple allegations arose that in the past she had used racial slurs online.

On Friday (22 May), the hashtag #DojaCatIsOverParty began trending after an old song with a racial slur emerged alongside allegations that she had taken part in racist video chats.

The song in question came out in 2015 under the title “Dindu Nuffin”, a term used to mock victims of police brutality.

Yesterday (24 May), Doja Cat denied that she had been involved in “any racist conversations” and apologised for her wording on the song.

“I want to address what’s been happening on Twitter,” she wrote on Instagram. “I’ve used public chat rooms to socialise since I was a child. I shouldn’t have been on some of those chat room sites, but I personally have never been involved in any racist conversations. I’m sorry to everyone I offended.”​

Doja Cat said her intent with “Dindu Nuffin” was to flip the meaning of the song to take aim at those who used it against her in the past.

“As for the old song that’s resurfaced, it was in no way tied to anything outside of my own personal experience”, she said. “It was written in response to people who often used that term to hurt me. I made an attempt to flip its meaning, but recognise that it was a bad decision to use the term in my music.”

“I understand my influence and impact and I’m taking this all very seriously. I love you all and I’m sorry for upsetting or hurting any of you. That’s not my character, and I’m determined to show that to everyone moving forward. Thank you.”

Last week, Doja Cat was named alongside Ariana Grande, Camila Cabello, Cardi B, Kehlani, Nicki Minaj and Beyonce by Lana Del Rey, who said that they “have had number ones with songs about being sexy, wearing no clothes, f***ing, cheating etc.”
