Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Duffy and Adele will go head to head after both being nominated for best Breakthrough Artist at the Q Awards.

Coldplay are up for four awards, securing the largest number of nominations and sealing their status at the top of the music scene following the release of their new, fourth album this year.

Newcomers The Ting Tings follow with three nods, including one for Best Track for their Number One hit That's Not My Name.

Welsh chanteuse Duffy, 24, who was kicked out of her school choir at the age of seven but is now compared to Sixties legend Dusty Springfield, is in the running for two gongs.

As well as a nomination for Breakthrough Artist, she is also up for Best Track with her Number One hit, Mercy.

Singing sensation Adele, 20, a Brit School graduate, is up for Breakthrough Artist after bursting on to the music scene with the song Chasing Pavements and Number One album, 19.

Other nominees announced today for the annual music bash include US star Katy Perry, in the running for Best Track for her Number One hit I Kissed a Girl. The Number One song, which has been criticised for its lyrics, was penned by Nineties popstar Cathy Dennis.

Perry will do battle in the Best Track category with Keane (Spiralling), Duffy (Mercy), Coldplay (Violet Hill), and The Ting Tings (That's Not My Name).

The Last Shadow Puppets - a side project of Arctic Monkey Alex Turner, Coldplay, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds are among the bands nominated for Best Album.
