In the early oughts, Alexi Murdoch’s syrupy folk songs soundtracked The O.C. and cult-indie film Garden State - the tranquil beauty of “Orange Sky” will live on forever.

But the UK singer-songwriter stepped out of the music scene since 2011 when his third studio album Towards the Sun was released.

Now six years later, Murdoch is back with a new song featuring Valgeir Sigurosson & Nico Muhly. Recorded in the Icelandic winter almost five years ago, Murdoch’s cover of “Another Day” was supposed to be a step towards his fourth record.

The song officially comes out on February 9 as part of the Amazon Music Original playlists “Love Me” and “Love Me Not” for Valentine’s Day. Some of the artists featured on the playlists include Dan Auerbach, Marlon Williams, Common Holly, Jay Som and Screaming Females.

Perhaps his latest release means we’re one step closer to getting a fourth record from Murdoch.

In any case, my how we’ve missed him.

Listen to the track below.

The stark nature of the track stems from the collaborators finding inspiration in their surroundings: Muhly’s shimmering keyboard arrangements akin to the Northern Lights and Sigur∂sson’s engineering that enhances the sound’s glacial quality.

Murdoch’s melancholic vocals are heart-stopping as he drops the key and tempo of the Harper original.
