A Glastonbury romance: Festival newlyweds hope it won't rain on their parade

Most couples opt for far-flung destinations for their honeymoon - but one pair of newlyweds have decided to spend theirs at Glastonbury Festival.

A huge cheer went up in the site's stone circle when John and Mathilda Fristrom Eldridge appeared in their wedding outfits, complete with the words "just married" painted on his back and tin cans tied to her waist.

The pair, from Newquay, Cornwall, got engaged two years ago in the field above the Park Stage.

As no legally-binding marriages can be carried out at the festival, they opted for the next best thing - having their wedding last weekend and making Glastonbury their honeymoon.

Mrs Fristrom Eldridge, 29, carrying her wedding bouquet wrapped in lace, said: "He proposed pretty much exactly two years ago today.

"It was such a big thing for us that we really wanted to come back to Glastonbury to celebrate.

"The proposal itself was such a surprise. I was working here and had a break so we went up the hill behind the park."

Her husband added: "I smuggled some Champagne in and had two rings, one for each of us, on a bracelet wrapped around the bottle.

"We then partied for the rest of the festival."

Mrs Fristrom Eldridge, an artist, moved to Newquay from her native Sweden shortly afterwards and the pair - who originally met in Indonesia two-and-a-half years ago - made their wedding plans.

They married on Saturday in Mevagissey, Cornwall, at a register office, before having a wedding ceremony presided over by a friend who is a poet and writer.

Mr Fristrom Eldridge, a video producer, said: "We're going to try to keep our wedding kit on for the whole festival.

"We're so glad to be here - we were so lucky to get tickets."

His wife said: "I've been to lots of festivals in Sweden and they're not as friendly. But this is such a happy, alternative place. We love being here and the music is brilliant."

They plan to have a second honeymoon this winter.
